Proverbs 2 – A Treasure Worth Seeking

My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight
    and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.

I love any story involving a treasure hunt.  Books, movies, TV shows where the plot is centered around finding a treasure are so intriguing.  The excitement of the treasure hunt, the searching and finding of clues, then the joy that comes once the treasure is found.  We read in these verses of Proverbs 2, where our search for wisdom is like seeking a treasure of great value.  One specific treasure mentioned is silver.  Silver was a very difficult metal to find.  Those who mined for it, would have to be lowered down into deep narrow shafts by ropes to get to the silver.  You would have to be very dedicated and committed to seek and find the silver.  We should have the same level of dedication and commitment in our search for wisdom.  Verse 2 challenges us to keep our ears open for wisdom and our hearts ready to apply the understanding.  We are not only to listen and hear the wisdom, we are to apply it to our lives.  May we have the same excitement of searching for treasure for our search for wisdom.

Matt
