30 – “No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel, can avail against the Lord.”
What does ocean front property in Arizona have to do with Proverbs 21? For those who were “country before country was cool” will recognize these words as lyrics from a George Strait song. In this song, George declares his love for a woman to be strong and never to fail. He would always love her, even if she decided to leave him. He declares his love for her in an opposite manner, “If you leave me I won’t miss you and I won’t ever take you back, ‘cause I don’t love you, now if you buy that I got some ocean front property in Arizona.” It is ridiculous to believe there is ocean front property in Arizona. It is impossible. We know from 4th grade geology, the Pacific Ocean would have to pass over California to arrive in Arizona. Likewise, Proverbs 21:30 teaches us that none of our wisdom, knowledge, and understanding is above or better than God’s wisdom. It is ridiculous to believe our wisdom is better than God’s. It is impossible. Even when we turn away from God, when we don’t believe in His love for us, or are willing to trust God to take care of us, God is still present with the wisdom we need to live the lives we are called to live. Our goal of studying Proverbs is to gain wisdom and understanding, however we must acknowledge that our wisdom is limited and that ultimately only God’s wisdom and purposes will prevail. If we believe our wisdom is all we need, then let’s pack up the moving van and head out to our ocean front property in Arizona.
