Sermon on the Mount- Salt

“You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” Matthew 5:13

We know salt is not that good for us.  Too much in our diets leads to issues such as high blood pressure.  Take a stroll down the aisle at the grocery store and you will find many products boasting no salt or low sodium on their labels.  I happen to like salt and at times crave salt, especially after a long run.  Before we go and throw out all the salt in our cabinets, in certain situations a little salt is good.

Before our time of refrigerators and ice houses, it was a challenge to keep food from going bad.  Salt was needed as a preservative.  Salt was important.  That’s why Jesus teaches us we are the salt of the earth.  We are important.  We are there to help preserve a decaying world.

May God use us to help a world in need.  May we go and be salt.
